(Manila, Philippines, July 10, 2013) — Delegates from the Philippine information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) industry attracted overwhelming interest at CeBIT 2013, Australia’s largest annual business forum. The delegation also showcased the country’s capabilities at the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) office.
Led by the Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) with the support of the Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO), the Philippines wooed and won the favor of several firms operating in Australia and New Zealand. Philippine Ambassador to Australia Belen Anota and Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Virginia Benavidez were present to support the mission and delegation.
The delegation hosted a forum within CeBIT, which attracted C-Level industry executives. Jose Mari Mercado, IBPAP president and CEO, reported a higher-than-expected turnout for the targeted forum. “The fact that we had a packed room and had to start early were good indicators of interest,” he said. “The Philippine IT-BPM industry has an effective value proposition. We can provide what they need and help improve their respective sectors.”
Nearly 400 business representatives from Australia, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Fiji and Papua New Guinea, among others, visited the Philippine booth at CeBIT 2013. Large enterprises, multinational companies and the media were also represented. Up to 60 percent of visitors were small- to medium-sized enterprises that sought assistance for expansion through various partnerships, while 20 percent were considering the possibility of investing in the country.
The strong support of the Philippine government through education and talent development programs, locator assistance, and tax incentives assured investors of industry’s stability. Patricia Abejo, Director for ICT industry development of the DOST-ICTO, presented the advantages of doing business in the Philippines as well as the initiatives that the Philippine government is pursuing to ensure a steady supply of highly educated talent pool, competitive and stable business environment, among others, through a dynamic and effective public-private partnerships.
She added that the availability of alternative locations for IT-BPM investments outside Metro Manila, called the Next Wave Cities™, also provide prospective investors a wider range of options for expansion.
In New Zealand, the Philippine delegation also facilitated a networking and business-matching event organized by the NZTE in partnership with IBPAP. The event gathered 12 New Zealand companies that wanted to explore opportunities specifically in the ICT sector. At least two companies are reported to be arranging plans to visit the Philippines this year.
“As the third largest English-speaking country with a literacy rate of 93 percent, the Philippines is consistently the preferred destination for voice services in customer care, technical support, financial services, sales, and collections. We expect more growth in the areas of finance, accounting, software development, and IT, among other high-value services,” Abejo said.
Led by the Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) with support from the Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) and Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA), 13 companies from a wide range of sectors showcased and represented the Philippine information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) industry at the main CeBIT exhibition hall in Sydney, Australia.
